Book sellers are the most interesting people in the world

2007 October 24

I’ve been buying books.

A lot of books.

One of my favourite activities during the weekends (in fact for most time) is to walk around book stores and magazine stores.

I know that most books are available online as ebooks these days but nothing beats sitting in a chair (comfortable), sipping a warm/cold drink (nice) with music playing in the background (rock but soft) while flipping through a book.

So one of the best thing about being here is that there are book sellers EVERYWHERE! There’re vendors on the streets peddling the latest novels at some of the cheapest prices! And it is always a good experience talking to them. 2 of the books vendors already know me by name. And one of them will always have a few choice recommendations for me whenever I drop by his store. So far he’s been spot on regarding all the books he’s recommended.

I’ve just finished Khaled Hosseni’s ”Kite Runner” under his recommendation and it is one of the most rewarding reads I’ve had in recent… months.

But the interesting thing about this Guy is that… he cannot read English! I am not making this up. I just found out and so I was asking him how did he make all the recommendations he did. He just said that he like the “feel” of the book. That although he does not read english, he reads good local literature. So he knows what a good book feels like.

You can’t argue with that! And like I’ve said, the Man’s been spot on so far.
